Ukrainian water specialists from Danube delta region visit Estonia on 21-25 November

The study visit takes place within the project “Working together for integrated management of water resources in the Ukrainian part of the Danube Delta Sub-basin”, implemented by Peipsi CTC and our Ukrainian partner  Center for Regional Studies.

The Danube Delta is one of Europe's largest wetlands; about twenty percent of it is situated in Ukraine and eighty percent in Romania. The abundance of wildlife, especially birds, makes the Danube Delta a potential top destination for eco-tourism.

The Estonian-Ukrainian joint project aims to facilitate the introduction of a river basin management approach in the delta area and institutional development of Ukrainian Danube River Basin Council.

For better water resources management, the Danube River Basin Management Department was founded in 2008 and in 2009 the Ukrainian Danube River Basin Council (UDRBC) was established. UDRBC is viewed as a voluntary platform to bring stakeholders together and provide a dialogue between them.

Current project activities include preparation on necessary legal documents for the registration of the Basin council, development of its website and training for the council members.  Next week four Danube River Basin Council members visit Estonia, meet our environmental specialists and also attend the IX Peipsi Forum on cross border cooperation and sustainable development in Lake Peipsi region.

The project is supported by Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Development Cooperation Program
